Resolve to Reorganize

Common New Year’s Resolutions are geared toward cleaning and organizing your living space. This year, you’ve finally resolved to clear out the clutter–for real this time. On the surface, it is a monumental task, but we have some tips to help you tackle your goals.

Declutter with Dedication

For a successful reorganization, you must first cut down on the clutter that takes up so much space. That does not mean you must throw away or sell your items, but some sort of system must be established. Whether you need space for renovations or just want a minimalist living space, cutting through the clutter is the first step. Keeping similar items together, such as magazines and papers, and clothes and shoes will prevent things from looking scattered.

Stick with Storage

You don’t want to get rid of your belongings and you never know what the future holds, so it’s best to keep them. If you don’t have the room and want to stay organized, self-storage is a viable option. You can rent a storage unit to your specifications. That means, whatever size you need, you have, and you can always add remove, or change your specifications.

You also have more options on how to store, as most facilities offer storage that comes either standard or with some capacity to control the environment. Air conditioning and even climate control have become the norm.

Clean with Vigor

While reorganizing, you will want to clean as you go to knock out that scrubbing. Wipe down, dust, sweep, and vacuum the inside of closets, pantries, cabinets, shelves, drawers, tables–pretty much everything and every surface. Clean the items you intend to store as well. No one wants to lug around dirty and dusty things from place to place. Keeping your items clean not only looks good but keeps them lasting longer as well.

Use polish for your furniture and wrap it in a material suitable for storage. Wipe down any dishes or collectibles and store them in containers. Wash and dry linens and other clothing items to prevent mustiness while storing them for the long term.

Organize with a Purpose

Organizing is essentially putting things in less obvious places. The rule of organizing is that everything has a place. It will be easier to complete this task of organization by breaking down the task by room. Focus on one room at a time. It can be easy to get off track and flit about from room to room, trying to get everything done all at once. However, you will do better to focus on one at a time.

Take the time to gather any materials you need to help organize your space. Purchase bins, containers, hooks, shelves, and other kinds of organizers from your local home supply store. Utilize these tools to make organizing easier and keep your belongings off surfaces and the floor for a crisp, clean environment.

Get Creative

When it comes to repurposing items in your home to be reused for storage, the trashier the better. Old plastic containers, glass jars, paper towel rolls, recycled milk containers, milk crates–the possibilities are endless, and they don’t stop at the recommendations in this post. Refurbish and repurpose these containers to keep odds and ends in one place, for things like loose paper clips, old adapters and chargers, paperwork, business cards, pens and pencils, and much more. There are a thousand videos and articles online with tons of ideas and practical applications of these recycling methods, so you won’t have to figure it out by yourself.

A new year is a new start, and having goals for the new year planned out will help you keep on top of things throughout the year.
