How to Safely Move with Pets

Moving can be stressful, and the presence of a pet compounds this stress. Your pet is used to a routine, and moving significantly disrupts that. It is a new environment with many unfamiliar sights and smells. What an adventure! So, how do you ease this transition and safely move with your pet without stressing them out? And how can self storage help safely move pets? Read on below to find out more.

Keep Their Routine the Same

We mentioned routine earlier. The best way to move with your pet is to keep their routine as similar as possible. Make sure to feed them at the same time, and if you are moving boxes to and fro and want to take a break, stop and take them for a walk. Give them pets and make sure you take them to their favorite spot on the way to your new place at some point throughout the day. This will work wonders in keeping them calm and relatively stable throughout the day.  Another thing that helps is gradually acclimating them to their new environment ahead of time. Before your move, if you are riding with them, swing by your future neighborhood. Walk a route to the local park. Drive past the house or the apartment complex so everything does not feel so overwhelming to them on their big day.

Make Sure You Secure Them During the Trip

When you are making the big transition, the ride can get bumpy, especially if you are driving with boxes or sitting in a moving truck. Make sure your pet is fully secure when they ride with you. You might not have state laws that require you to buckle them in like a child, but some laws require you to restrict them somehow. For your sake, even if that is not the case, containing them in a crate or a net can keep them from getting into or biting boxes. It is vital to ensure they are secure and safe, away from heavy bins, boxes, and structures.

Keep Your Pets Cool

Since many moves are performed in June, July, August, and September, the weather is often hot. Because of this, you must stay vigilant against dehydration, both for yourself and your pets. Make sure you have water bowls on hand and keep them in a vehicle that has air conditioning. If your air conditioner is out, leave the windows down so they can get air circulation. Be vigilant and ensure they stay safe.  If you plan a move, you should rent storage space at a storage facility to stay organized while relocating. Why not call us at Mini U Storage?
